In order to respond effectively to rapidly recovering passenger flows, to ensure both service quality and aviation security requirements, Lithuanian Airports have launched a call for tenders to select a private sector company, which will be able to provide additional capacity required namely by the aviation security specialists of Vilnius Airport.

During the Tender Procedure, working hours of certified professionals, which are especially needed at Vilnius Airport during a specific period, such as peak passenger hours, will be procured. According to the representatives of Lithuanian Airports, in some periods, already in the first quarter of 2022, there will be an opportunity to supplement the existing shifts of the aviation security staff by 10-16 workers of the private sector.

According to Vidas Kšanas, Chief Airports Safety and Security Officer at Lithuanian Airports, the need to seek opportunity to use private business in the future in the field of aviation security was determined by greater future flexibility in drawing up work schedules of shift, by the possibility to adapt quickly to passenger peak periods, as well as by examples of other airports in Europe, where such practices have been common and applied for decades.

‘It should be noted that Lithuanian Airports will remain responsible, both now and in the future, for ensuring aviation security. Many airports operate under a model where certified representatives of private business provide aviation security services. Based on the good practices of various foreign countries, we decided to initiate the procurement procedure and we look forward to receiving applications from the local and international market participants’, - says V. Kšanas.

According to him, various successful aviation security models, which are developed together with the private sector representatives, are already in use at the airports of Tallinn, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Ljubljana and many Scandinavian countries.
