Lithuanian Airports has entered into a contract agreement with HISK, an infrastructure construction company that successfully secured the public procurement bid. HISK will oversee the expansion and development of Kaunas Airport's northern apron, with a contract value of 15 million euros (excluding VAT). Preparatory work is slated to commence by the end of this year, with completion expected in the spring of 2025.

More space for aircraft

“The expansion of Kaunas airport is important in order to increase technical service (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul - MRO) capabilities and maintain leadership positions of this field in the Baltic region. Demand for MRO services will remain high both in the short and long term, so investments in the development of the apron are economically justified. In addition, Kaunas airport logistics capabilities are particularly important for military mobility projects with NATO partners that constantly carry out flights of various destinations from here", says Arnas Dumanas, Director of the Lithuanian Airports Development Department.

After the completion of the project, the number of aircraft parking spaces at Kaunas Airport will increase by more than one and a half times. Additional aircraft parking and engine testing areas will also be created. The total area of the new apron will reach more than 35 thousand sq. meters. Kaunas airport will operate normally during the apron development works.

The public procurement for the development of the northern apron of Kaunas Airport was announced in the middle of this year.

Contract work on the apron will start as soon as the contract performance documents are received.

Expansion of Kaunas airport terminal awaits

According to A. Dumanas, in parallel, a contractor will be announced soon, and another development project will start At Kaunas airport – the expansion of the passenger terminal, which is also one of the essential constituents of the Lithuanian Airports strategic plan.

The growth of Kaunas Airport ensures the creation of new job opportunities in the Central Lithuania region and long-term economic returns for the state. Kaunas Airport holds a leading position in the Baltic region for aircraft maintenance and repair services. Companies such as Ryanair (through its subsidiary, Kaunas Aircraft Maintenance Services), FL Technics, DAT, and MAAS Aviation are already conducting MRO activities at the airport.
